Comments: another reason why Ghiberti won th competition: he used LESS bronse what became quite significent in early - capitalist :) society

Comments: Abraham doesn't seem willing to kill his son in this one; his hand seems to be still, as if he's still deliberating and the angel doesn't seem to be stopping him anytime soon. In brunelleschi's, Abraham seems very determined plunging at his son to kill him quickly, while the angel has to literally push Abraham away... i dunno. i guess the question is, what was abraham really thinking at that moment?

Comments: Ghiberti won because as a whole his sculpture is far more realistic. It shows the struggle that he went through; the decision between remaining loyal to his son... or to god. Brunellschi made him into a seeming evil-The willingness to kill his son with no thought of it. Ghiberti's shows true human nature- how we are not too willing to kill our own blood. I think it was right that he won- he deserved it.

Comments: Ghiberti won because his work had a sense of balance and harmony that was common during the Renaissance, while Brunellschi's was uncommon with the sense of action and disharmony.

Comments: As Abraham brings his son to be sacraficed to show his faith in God, there is a fear that the angel isn't going to stop him. The lamb is ready to be taken instead. The lamb is repesenting Jesus a sacrafice to God. Ghiberti shows the average daily life of the commoners also offering sacrafices, giving this a realistic effect. The main object of this is the glare between Abraham and Issac. Notice how the artist also gives Issac that classical nude appearce one of a greek god and kneeing insteed of a chance to get up, he puts him down and showing an end of life.

Comments: Ghiberti won because he gained his inspiration form the Old Testament. Not many artists of his time thought that far back, they were more set on the gospels and all the New Testament crap, that they forgot how abstract a piece from the OT could have been

Comments: Actually, Ghiberti won because it cost less to produce (it used less bronze than Brunelleschi's work). The people who chose the artist (the wealthy merchant families) had no concept of antique styles since they would not have attended a school that taught classical art from antiquity. In fact, they valued older styles from the medieval period because they saw those types of work as being from the time closer to Christ. It just so happens that the one they chose, because it was cheaper to produce, happened to also embody more 'modern' (for that time) elements.

Comments: Well, my opinion is : Ghiberti won, not only because of his talented work but because of how much eyecontact and movement was added in his sacrifice of Isaac. He has a panel that is basicaaly realistic compared to Brunelleschi's which wasn't bad. Infact his creatures were better done. But the judges.. were looking forward to someone able to do realaastic doors and that person was only the Great Lorenzo Ghiberti. What do you all think.

Comments: Brunelleshi didnt win, because it was raw and human. there was a direct intervention of god. it shows the devotion to god and it also pours with emotion because he has to sacrifice his son.Ghiberti won because it his was still gothic influenced. this was early renaissance.

Comments: I think he won for the fact that the rocks in the foreground gave the painting an overall diagonal depiction between which side was the important theme of the work. It also makes it more interesting to look at and more balanced.

Comments: Ghibertis piece not only shows the human emotion of Abraham(PBUH) in reluctance to sacrifice his son for the will of god but also portrays the piece in a gothic manner known to the judges unlike brunulleschi's piece. The people all have a "late gothic"/contrapposto stance that is clearly more realistic than brunulessci's folk.
