User Comments:Name: Date: 2003-01-31 Comments: Has anyone any idea where I can find a close-up of the actual sarcophagus? Apparently Michelangelo carved it entirely of white marble with depictions of demons and evil creatures surronding the deceased pope.

However, it is an error to say that it is the tomb of "Pope" John XXIII, for the true Pope John XXIII reigned from 1958 to 1963. This tomb is that of ANTIpope John XXIII, a man CLAIMING to be the true pope in the sixteenth (or fifteenth) century when he really wasn't. Antipope John XXIII is buried here while the true Pope John XXIII is buried in the Basilica of St. Peter, Rome.
